Blood Falls


Since visitors to this blog enjoy a spot of the bizarre now and again, here is another for the collection -- Blood Falls, on the flank of the Taylor Glacier in Antarctica.

Apparently the red colouring comes from iron-rich water issuing from the glacier in an area of very high evaporation.  As the water evaporates the salts are concentrated, and they also become rust-coloured as a result of oxidation.  Very interesting......
